Oktoberfest – Helen, GA

Helen is about 1 hr and 20 minutes from Athens. We took a family trip up there for Oktoberfest because who doesn’t love beer and sausage? Also, I took German for a few semesters in college, and though I don’t really speak much, I am absolutely fascinated by them. The town is extremely beautiful, and the weather was absolutely perfect when we visited!

20141102_135302The first thing we did was find a place to eat – we were so ready!

We followed our noses…

Live music greeted us as soon as we got out of the car. Here were the culprits! They were great 🙂 There were also people dancing sometimes. We went on the last day (Nov 2) because it was the only day we were all free. But can you imagine this huge place filled with happy tipsy people, cheering each other on and being merry?

YUM…We all got “platters” = 2 wursts (I got Weiß and cheddar, and apparently the Hungarian was good too!), 1 side (I got potato salad, brother got red cabbage, mother got sauerkraut…all delicious!), 2 pickles, and either rye or pretzel bread.20141102_143332

Beer nuts for dessert 🙂 I took these home with me for a late night snack. They were tasty!

And then we walked around and saw all the little shops. It was SO beautiful!IMG_1541 IMG_1508 IMG_1510 FullSizeRender IMG_1525

There were tons of little side streets, and we found a lovely place that made homemade ice-cream.IMG_1513

There were all sorts of interesting shops that sold things like mini fairy town accessories, and alligator jerky (also, kangaroo, etc)IMG_1517 IMG_1542

Also, I learned that Helenians are pretty snarky:IMG_1520IMG_1519There are other festivals held here, and then tubing in the summer! I am definitely going back because I want to try the “fried cheese restaurant.” And I want to tube.
