If you have access to Nature, you should read this new study on Teixobactin!
Antibiotic resistance is a huge fear, so this new potential antibiotic is really exciting!! The best part? Resistant strains will have a hard time developing because even the bacteria that produces the chemical isn’t resistant. That means there are no genes (that we know of) for resistance to teixobactin, and therefore horizontal transfer (which is thought to be the reason for penicillin/vancomycin resistance) cannot occur aka no bacteria knows how to fight this chemical and they can’t learn from anyone else.
Forbes also has a article, and the writer is not as optimistic about the resistance-potential.
What do y’all think?
